Chapter Six

Marcel verified that he and Jeremy had all their belongings as they readied themselves to depart the train. He smiled as he recalled how willingly Jeremy had offered up his submission once he’d accepted their combined destiny—embraced it even. His intuition told him they had a glorious future ahead together.

But that realization didn’t negate all his worries.

After all, Jeremy was a different species from vampires, an unknown in many ways. Their kind had certainly never intermingled before. Perhaps Jeremy would come to regret, even hate Marcel, over being changed? What if his clan threatened or tried to murder his mate?

Marcel drew his eyebrows together, his lips pressing into a thin line. He wasn’t given to such maudlin musings—not since his maker had turned him. What was it about Jeremy that brought out such…

Tender emotions? Is that what these are? These weren’t the sort of feelings he was accustomed to, at least not for over a century. Lust, anger, hatred—perhaps a sense of camaraderie on occasion—those were the only feelings that had lingered from almost the moment he’d shed his human existence.

Marcel grumbled to himself, unsure how he felt about his unsettling thoughts. He tugged on his leather gloves, then snapped his fingers to get the attention of a nearby porter.

“Could you take these bags, please?”

After pressing fifty euros into the man’s hand, he instructed him to not only remove their belongings from the train, but to stand guard over them until their transportation arrived. He wrapped his wool designer scarf around his neck, resisting the urge to get surly over how long Jeremy was taking to do a final sweep of their room.

Jeremy had never returned to his compartment after Marcel had claimed him. Marcel hadn’t wanted to be separated from him for a second, and his fears regarding Jeremy’s safety hadn’t abated. Instead, he’d sent Channing to retrieve his luggage.

As Marcel tapped his foot impatiently on the platform, another pesky fear wormed its way into his blackened heart. Would his sweet Jeremy turn into a vicious monster as well? Lose the adorable, feisty nature and humor that his pre-vampiric life had contained?

Marcel let out a sigh, relieved as Jeremy appeared in the doorway of the car.

“Wow, this is unbelievable!” Jeremy hopped off the train. “It’s nighttime, but I can see everything as if the sun was shining.” He wiggled the tip of his finger in his ear. “It’s also really loud out here.”

Marcel involuntarily shuddered. “Please don’t speak of the sun.”

Jeremy winced. “Ooh, that’s right.” He grabbed Marcel’s wrist. “Can you keep an eye on me? I might forget some of those vampire rules. You know. The ones that might kill me? I don’t want to turn into a pile of ash.”

Marcel gasped, yanking Jeremy to his side. “You mustn’t say such things! I forbid you from ever turning into ash or a puddle of goo.”

Jeremy’s eyes widened. “Goo is an actual possibility?” He swallowed hard. “What, pray tell, would be the cause of such a thing?”

Marcel squeezed Jeremy’s shoulder, waging an inner battle to maintain a calm expression and blasé tone.
